I was an assistant coach when one of the boys came over to ask me something. He knew I wasn't the coach. He didn't know what to call me. He stammered for a second and landed on: "Uhhh, Kinda Coach? Can I go to the bathroom?"

I liked it enough to have it embroidered on my team bag.

I coach a club team and a high school team, and I build software for the problems I keep running into on the sideline. I archived my own team's game film by hand for four or five years before finally automating it. Before that, I cobbled together a rig of GoPros and wrote code to stitch the footage into something watchable — then found Veo, realized they were millions of dollars ahead of me, and shut the project down.

That's roughly the pattern. Build the thing you needed, and say plainly when something already does it better.

I'm also 50 this year, running five 5Ks a week, and working back toward a marathon I started training for a long time ago and never ran. That's here too.
